Short Story

Life at a Standstill

The days were the same, the people around him were the same but he was no more the same person. The recent series of events has brought about a whole new change in his perspective to life. He lay still in his bed staring at the ceiling. Days and nights made no difference to him. The whole place seemed devastated; piles of newspapers on the front door; thin layers of fine dust lay on the furniture; it seemed as if the place hadn't been in use for ages.

One fine Friday afternoon, fifteen-year-old Ben had committed suicide. He was the life support system of his father, James. His mother had passed away a year ago due to severe illness. Twenty-three days had passed, but James still could not function. He would barely eat or drink and would just lie still in his bed.

The doorbell rang. James shrieked and reluctantly got up and answered the door. It was his friend Ryle who immediately hugged James. He was disappointed to see him in this state of mind and said, “This was unfortunate; however, you’ll have to sail through this. Life never stops for anyone…” “And that’s the saddest part,” mumbled James. “And you know it better!”

Should pupils be paid to stay in schools after the age of 14-16 years?

Education, especially schooling, is a vital part of a student’s life. Going to school helps in the holistic development of a child. In spite of that, statistics state that the dropout rate of students has been increasing over the past few years. According to a government report, in some states the dropout rate of students in secondary school is more than that of 30%. However, in the long run this is not feasible to the economic growth of the country, and we soon need a solution for this. However, this issue is not only in India, but is prevalent in many other countries, one such being the UK. As a solution to this issue, the UK government started a scheme in 2004, wherein teenagers beyond the age of fourteen were being paid to stay in schools. Can this also be practiced in India? Will this decrease the dropout rates? Let’s evaluate.

One of the main reasons for students dropping out of studies is financial concerns of the family due to which they are forced to start working at a tender age instead of studying. In such cases, if we pay students to stay in school, they will be able to continue further studies and will be able to help their families financially. However, it’s human nature that we don’t value anything we get for free, and it might happen that the students are not focused towards studies. Misuse of money is also a possibility. In this case, the whole purpose of promoting education would be defeated, but the monetary flow would be high.

It is very rightly said, “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds you plant.” According to statistics, the highest dropout rate of students is in rural areas where there is lack of awareness and facilities. Paying the secondary students, in the long run, would help in upliftment of the marginalized sections of the society. However, the money to pay these students would in turn be coming from the taxpayers. The central government of India levies custom duty, central duty, income tax as well as service tax on the citizens of the country; if the tax is increased further the middle class will be the one at the suffering end, and the country’s economic growth will be hampered.

In my opinion, students, if paid to stay in schools, might take it for granted. It has been a trend for decades that students slog and sweat and after attaining a certain age, they start earning money. However, if they are paid at such an early age, they wouldn’t have such a level of maturity and experience, and they would not be valuing the money. This might result in eradicating the traditional essence of education.

The Survivor

8th July 2039

“Ting-Ting-Ta-Da-Ting” “Ting-Ting-Ta-Da-Ting” rang the alarm. Amy lazily tossed around her bed, snoozed the alarm, pulled the sheet above her head and slept again. It was Friday morning and like any other young girl, Amy too was very lazy to go to work. However, the alarm clock as annoying as a stray dog went on and on. Amy reluctantly got up and went about her daily chores until she caught the bus.

Amy was a young girl in her early twenties. She was tall, graceful and very fair. She had miraculously silky skin, wide sea-blue eyes, freckles around her nose and brown blond hair usually falling over her forehead. She was an introvert by nature, and spent most of her time, listening to music and reading books. Unlike other girls of her age, she was very mature, quiet and pensive. She loved children and worked in an orphanage.

The bus reached the orphanage within 15 mins. As soon as Amy got down, her friend and co-teacher Suchita came to her. She informed Amy that she was being called to the staff room urgently. Amy was confused and puzzled. She was constantly brain-storming, trying to recall if she had made a blunder. With her steps getting quicker with each passing thought, she reached the staff room. Seeing no one around and the lights all off she was intimidated. “Boom!!” a noise startled her. The lights went on and all her co-mates were singing for her and wishing her.

Tears rolled down Amy’s cheeks as she quickly hugged Suchita. Amy had never celebrated her birthday since the time she was eight years old. Only Suchita knew this secret of hers and so on her 25th Birthday, Suchita had planned this small surprise for her.

“You are the only one I have in this world, Suchi,” muffled Amy, in her teary voice.

“Shh! Never ever say that. We all are here for you,” said Suchita, releasing herself from Amy’s grip and wiping her tears.

Suchita was Amy’s best friend. She had short, curvy stature, with ashy blond hair and grey eyes. They had met in the college. Suchita, familiar of Amy’s reserved nature would always pester her to get involved in the college fests and programs. Amy would feel connected to her and used to open up with her as and when she wanted. She felt that Suchita was understanding and empathetic.

Amy cut her cake, and hesitantly accepted all the gifts. There was one old lady in the orphanage, who was the librarian. She had been in the orphanage for last 20 yrs. She came upto Amy, hugged her and said, “It’s your birthday today! I want to ask you something. Will you answer me honestly?”

“Uhh ya sure…Please tell me ma’am,” replied Amy.

“Child, I see you over here everyday. You have never taken a single leave in the past 5 years. You are so young, intelligent, educated and hardworking, but still why do you work in this orphanage? Is there some obligation?”

“No ma’am, not at all. I work here by choice. I did get job offers from banks in Singapore and Australia, but I wish to work here.”

“But, my dear, are you happy? I might be wrong, but I have never seen you cheerful and jovial. I have always seen you very serious and engrossed in your work. I think something is bothering you. Would you like to share it.”

A chill ran down Amy’s spine. In a fraction of second, her eyes filled with tears. In a muffled voice, she began to speak, “I..I..uh..I am not from India. I am from Kyiv, a city in Ukraine.”

Suchita gave her a glass of water. She composed herself and started speaking again.

“Amy! Amy! Where are you?” said Mrs. Allen, Amy’s mother.

“Mom, I am busy. I am finishing my art piece.”

“Oh wow! You’ve made your dad and my portrait!”

“Yes Mom, I have to submit a painting in my school. It has to be about something I love the most. For me, it was you and dad.”

“Aww Amy, that’s so sweet of you. However, my dear, I had to tell you something really important.”

“What is it, Mom?”

“Dear, you know Russians are invading our country and declaring wars. So it is really not safe for us to stay here now. Your dad just called me from his office and asked me to pack our bags and leave for your uncle’s place day after tomorrow.”

“Mom, why? …all my friends, school, house everything will be left behind. I don’t want to go.”

“Amy, think practically. What if something happens to any of us?”

“Mom, it’s my birthday tomorrow. How can we leave…what about my party? I don’t want to go,” screamed Amy.

“Amy, don’t argue. Your birthday will come every year, but right now it is important that all of us are safe. Why are you worrying? We will celebrate your birthday with all pom-and-show, just the way you want when the situation is normal.”

Amy didn’t pay heed to what her mother told her. She was annoyed and walked out of the room. Later in the evening, on her father’s return from the office, Mr. Allen spoke to Amy calmly and tried to convince her, but she was not ready to budge. She was adamant on not leaving her friends, school and home behind.

She rudely said, “You guys don’t care about my feelings. You don’t care about my birthday. Just because you are elder to me doesn’t mean that you can force your decisions on me. However, I am helpless and I’ll have to listen to you; I’ll show you what I can do when I am grown up.”

Mr. and Mrs. Allen were shocked. They couldn’t believe what Amy had just said. They did not want Amy to be heartbroken and depressed on her birthday and so they dropped the idea of leaving.

The next day was a reign of terror. Early in the morning, Mr. Allen went out to bring a cake for Amy; to his utter surprise, not a single living creature was there to be seen. The roads were completely deserted. Mr. and Mrs. Allen tried contacting their friends to know the situation, but all the network wires and connections were cut. There was no source of communication left. The television and radio lines were also cut. “Boooooom!!” a bomb blasted. Within minutes there were sounds of gun whirings, people shouting, and there was commotion all around. The Allen family was aghast. They quickly filled the bags with first-aid boxes, water bottles and all other essentials. Amy ran to her room, to pack her stuff while her parents were in the kitchen and garage. “Aaaaaaa!” came a sound. Amy recognized that it was her mother’s shout. She ran out, and found the door was left swung open and her parents were nowhere to be seen. Amy was numb. She didn’t know how to react. She started walking directionless, not knowing where to go. She reached a junction where most of the survivors had gathered and then pushed into a container, not an inch left. The rescuers wanted to save every single living soul. The container made a whirring sound as it was air-lifted and was soon high up in the air. After few hours, that seemed like eternity, the container finally landed in front of an orphanage. An old woman took Amy in her arms, and took her inside. Amy was still holding the piece of paper in her hand – the last piece of memory – from her happy abode few hours back. Her red face and fierce eyes clearly stated her ordeal. Her tears had dried, but she was still crying inside. She didn’t know when she fell asleep.

Present Day

“Till date, I don’t have the slightest clue as to what happened. I spent rest of my childhood in the orphanage; later I went to college and met Suchi, who supported me and was always there for me. I wanted to help all the children who met a bad fate just like me, and so I came to this orphanage. I still don’t know where my parents are, how are they…are they even alive!” Amy cried her heart out. The old lady came up to her and hugged her.

Amy muffled, “I regret speaking to my parents so rudely that day, ma’am. I just feel dreadful for being so self-centered and not listening to them. I wish just for once, I had listened to them and they would be with me even today. I still fantasize, how great it would have been if there was a secret underground tunnel where there were all the rescue facilities and so all my near and dear ones would be safe. Right now I don’t want anything, I just want my parents to here with me.”

There it was a young girl still regretting her behavior but out there standing high-headed, holding the baton, helping the needy and affected.

Festivals: A Boon or Bane?

Festivals are like lights in our life. Festivals totally rejuvenate us and give us the opportunity to meet our family and friends. Though festivals are joyous occasions and they enrich our customs and traditions, we have been celebrating them in a way that it tends to harm our environment in the form of pollution.

On festivals like Diwali and Dussehra, we have made it a tradition to burn crackers, or burn the effigy of Ravan, which causes a lot of pollution in the air, and people suffering from respiratory diseases face great difficulty in breathing. On the festival of Holi, we waste a lot of water whereas on Ganesh Chaturthi we pollute the water by immersing idols in the rivers.

Though these festivals are a boon for us, they are gradually becoming a bane for the environment, therefore I think we should impose proper rules and guidelines so that we celebrate environment-friendly festivals.

Narrative Style - The Magic Shop

The Magic Shop by H.G. Wells

(Inspired by H.G. Wells)

Herbert George Wells also known as H.G. Wells was born on 21st September 1946. He was an English writer, and was prolific in many genres. Some of his famous works include The Invisible Man, The Time Machine, The Sleeper Awakes, The Magic Shop, etc.

The Magic Shop by H.G. Wells is one of the most phenomenal and exceptional stories I’ve ever read. I can say that Wells, with his rather idiosyncratic way of writing, has portrayed the magic element in the story in an amazing way, making it very engaging and enthralling for young readers.

The magic element in the story is portrayed in a beautiful way. It won’t be an exaggeration if I say that I really felt I was walking in the Regent Street experiencing all of the magic myself. The element of imagery is also emphasized in a magnificent way and the thrill remains intact throughout the story.

This story would now be my bench-mark for further readings.

Absolutely recommendable!

 Festivals of India

‘The greatness of a culture can be found in its festivals.’

India is a secular country having diverse religions, languages, customs and traditions. This is the reason why Indians celebrate many festivals throughout the year. Festivals make us forget our cultural and religious differences. They unite people, and they come together for the sole purpose of celebration and happiness.

Other than that, festivals also help us embrace our culture and religion. People look forward to festivals all-round the year. Festivals spark joy and give people something to look forward to. India celebrates many festivals like Christmas, Eid, Diwali, Holi and many more.

During these festivals, people just keep their work aside, and meet their relatives, friends and families. There are gatherings and parties, where they exchange gifts and wishes. We all wear new clothes, decorate our houses, etc.

Festivals totally rejuvenate us and then these are memories which are stored in our mind, and revivify us to resume our normal routine again. We continue to take care of all our day-to-day responsibilities with hope – hope for the festivals in the following year – and then again experience the same excitement once the festivals are round the corner.

 Women Empowerment

‘The strength of a woman can carry the weight of the world.’

Woman empowerment is an important thing that needs to be accomplished. Woman should have equal rights of decision making, voting, education etc. India has progressed a lot in making equal rights for women, but the implementation still lacks in some criteria.

Though girls are now attending schools and colleges, pursuing their careers and there is no discrimination in this field; but still in rular areas, child marriage is practiced, and girls are forced to leave their studies at an early age to sit at home and do household chores.

Therefore, the biggest challenge for India is to change the thinking of these orthodox people, so that not only a few but all women can make their own identity and shine.

A childhood memory - Article

Clouds

When I was a little child, I thought that we could touch clouds, and play in them. So, I had the dream that one day I would surely play in the clouds and enjoy myself.

One day, this dream came true, when I was 5 and was given the chance to do ziplining.

We went to Dharamshala; it was very cold and misty there, almost all the time. The sun hardly shone and the clouds were always there in the sky. My mother, from the beginning, is very adventurous, and though she is caring, she still doesn’t let us be in our comfort zone. So, one day, when we went for site-seeing we saw there was ziplining going on, and my mother forced me to do it.

I was very terrified, as I had the fear of falling down, but it was not because I would get hurt, but was actually that I wouldn’t be able to meet my friends for many days in case of an injury.

But then, seeing the height of the zipline, I thought I could touch the clouds, and when I asked my mom if I could do so, she grabbed the opportunity and told me that I could do so.

With butterflies in my stomach and also the greed to fulfill my wish, I agreed.

It was a mind blowing experience. I was just feeling that I had touched the clouds, and I was enjoying myself too much. When I came down, I started crying, as I wanted to do it one more time. And guess what? I ended up touching the clouds 7 times!!!

Descriptive Writing - Smartphone

 Clicksi, the Phone!

My smartphone is my best friend. It’s my lifeline. Though I don’t have my own phone, I still feel really attached to my mother’s smartphone. Whenever I get a break from my online classes, I play games on my phone or I listen to music.

It is a Samsung phone, and is black in color. For protection there is a transparent shield on the screen. It also has a very nice camera. It clicks beautiful pictures, with amazing lighting effects and filters. It also has many useful apps, like Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, CamScanner etc.

Though, it is very harmful for our eyes, and damages them but still in the crisis time, smartphones have been very helpful to entertain ourselves.

Holi Fun with Friends

Radhika's Unforgettable Experience

It was the day of Holi! Radhika and her friends were all set for the day and were very excited. They had done all preparations for the day in prior. They had bought colors, water guns, water balloons etc.

Radhika lived in an apartment in Delhi. Though her apartment complex was very small, with only 300 flats, there was great bonding among everyone, and they all used to celebrate festivals together, like a big family.

“Tring-Tring, Tring-Tring,” went the phone.

“Hello,” said Radhika.

“Hi, Radhika! Sheena and Riya are also there on the line, and we were planning to go out at 10am. So, is it fine with you?” said Tanya.

“Ohh yes! That’s fine! You know, I am so very excited!” said Radhika.

“Me too,” said Sheena.

“Ok then, let’s meet at 10 near the park. Bye!” said Riya.

They hung up the phone and started getting ready. At 10, they met in the park and were mesmerized to see that people had decorated the park with all sorts of decoration items. They had set it up like a pavilion and had decorated it with small umbrellas, tiny models of butterflies, and garlands of beautiful flowers. Colors and water guns were kept all over the place. The sight of the park was just like a feast to the eyes. Radhika and her friends played Holi and had lots and lots of fun.

Soon, they were all very hungry, and they went into the clubhouse to have food. There was a huge variety of food, but all of them, especially Radhika, was so tired that they just drank the Thandai (a special drink, drank on Holi, made up of milk and dry fruits) offered to them by one of the aunties.

But, as soon as they all started drinking it, Sheena, Riya and Tanya all started laughing. Radhika was just clueless as to why they were laughing, but she was so drained out that she just asked once and when they ignored her and continued to laugh, she did not ask them for the second time. Soon, they all left for their homes.

When Radhika reached her house, she looked at the clock and it was 2pm. She took a quick bath and started making a sandwich for herself as she was feeling a bit hungry. But while making the sandwich, she felt a bit dizzy and her head was aching a bit.

And then, to Radhika’s surprise, she saw that the glass of water kept on the slap was flying. Then, the next moment, she saw that the flowerpot kept in the balcony was moving on its own.

“Aaaaaaaaaaa!” shouted Radhika. She just ran out of the kitchen and went to her living room. Over there, she saw that the television switched on all by itself and was also flipping channels. Radhika just shrieked and went to her room. She sat on the bed and was thinking that she was just imaging all that and she should just continue making her sandwich. But, when she got up, she saw the shadow of a bald man on the window, standing with a knife, which was all covered in blood. Radhika fainted and fell on the bed.

“Tring-Tring, Tring-Tring” went the phone.

“Tring-Tring, Tring-Tring” but no one picked up the phone.

Soon, Radhika got up, feeling very hungry. She saw the clock and was surprised to see that it was 6pm already.

Then, she went out and saw that the light of the kitchen was switched on. A half-chopped tomato was kept on the chopping board; the bread was out of the fridge, and the butter was all melted.

“What has happened to me? I remember that I came back after playing Holi with my friends, and then ... Ohh! Yes, I wanted to eat a sandwich, but then … what happened to me? I didn’t make the sandwich because the tomato is out here, that too half chopped,” said Radhika to herself.

She took a glass of water and sat on the sofa, thinking hard. Then suddenly, the phone rang again … “Tring-Tring, Tring-Tring” … Radhika picked up the phone, and it was Riya.

“Hi Radhika! What’s up?” said Riya.

“All good! What about you?” said Radhika.

“I am also good! Just wanted to tell you that there is a sudden plan that we all are meeting at Sheena’s place for some chit chat. So you have to reach her place by 6:30,” said Riya.

“Ya, sure! I will see you there. Byee!” said Radhika.

“Ok, bye!” said Riya.

Then again, Radhika sat on the sofa, thinking hard, what had happened to her. And soon she realized that she had seen a glass flying, the flowerpot moving on its own and the television switched on itself and flipped channels, and then the bald man with the knife. And, she had fainted.

“But was it a dream? I can’t really seem to be seeing any flying glasses any time before today. But then, I am sure that it wasn’t a dream because I must have shouted out loud for sure, and then I would have got up. But then what on the freaking earth was that?” said Radhika to herself.

“Anyways, I should now just get ready and go to Sheena’s place,” thought Radhika.

She quickly made the sandwich, gobbled it and rushed to Sheena’s place. When she reached there, she saw that Riya and Tanya were already there. She went inside and just started talking to them.

Then she told her friends what had happened to her.

While she was telling her, she saw that her friends were giggling continuously. And, at the end, they laughed as if Radhika had been telling them a hilarious joke or prank.

She got a bit annoyed, and said, “Guys, what’s this? You know I was so scared, and till now, I have been unable to figure out what it was. And you all are laughing.”

Then, controlling their giggles, her friends told Radhika that when they all were offered Thandai by one of the aunties, Radhika had mistakenly picked up cannabis (Bhang) and all the things she had been seeing was due to intoxicating effect of the cannabis (Bhang).

Radhika laughed out loud along with everyone and said, “Ohh … Now I understand why you were all laughing at that time and why I was seeing all this. How stupid of me!”

All the friends enjoyed the chit-chat session, especially Radhika’s adventure.

This became a memorable Holi for everyone!

Super Powers!!

If I had super powers, then what it would be…..

I woke on a bright sunny morning and surprisingly found a note asking me to reach back side of the staffroom of my school at 11am. I didn’t show it to my parents as I was scared but decided to explore as it was a safe place being in school. As soon as I reached there, I saw an alien standing right in front of me. I was anxious and scared but was equally excited as I had an array of questions about aliens. The alien gave me an opportunity to ask for any super power and I thought that it would be a great chance to boost around in my friends. As we say, ‘Human greed can never be satisfied’, I too desired lot of powers and the list seemed endless. But then I choose a super power, that would enable me “to read anyone’s mind”.

I was super excited that this power would help escape my mom’s scolding, anticipate my teacher’s question, sense if my friend is going to back-bite me….and the list seemed unending. I also thought of using it to help my friends and sister in need.

This is just a dream…. and dreams too come true !!

A boon in disguise for me !!!

“Every cloud has a silver lining”

This phrase, according to me, correctly matches the Covid-19 pandemic.

Covid-19 is a pandemic situation, which we all are facing, all over the world. This must be a curse for many people, but it’s actually a boon for me. This is because....

  • Nature saves us, and we should save it too!!!

Due to this lockdown, we don’t see many cars, buses and trucks on the road; there is no emission from industries and all this is resulting in less pollution. Now, early in the morning, we can hear birds chirping melodiously, flowers blooming and the sun shining brightly. We are able to observe the beauty at its fullest, which we were unable to do in our normal routine life so far.

  • Family is the best possession one can have!!!

In our normal lives, we are so busy and full of stress that we are unable to spend time with our families. But I think this is the time we can play with our family, chit-chat together and spend time with each other. Also, we can spend time with our grandparents as they teach us a lot of moral values.

  • Attitude and not our Aptitude determines our Altitude!!!

This is also the best time we can work on our interests, and improvise our personality. Also, we can work on our talent, and learn things at which we are not good. We can even work on our physical as well as mental health.

So we should actually be grateful to God, that we got this time.

I hope this article has changed your mind as well.

Stay home!!! Stay safe!!!

Topic – The Hardest Challenge Brought the Best in Me

Someone has rightly said, "Lurching roads often lead to beautiful destinations."

The hardest challenge in my life so far was going for a night out from School, without my parents and that too, out of the city to Sariska in Rajasthan for a Space Astronomy club.

I was excited that I would be going with my friends for a night out but I was too apprehensive at the same time. I was nervous with the thought of managing everything on my own since it was first time for me. However, I was convinced by my parents and friends and I agreed to take the plunge.

Once we left the school premises, we were soaked in fun and learning for the next two days. I realized that I was quite confident during the trip and even I helped my best friend to manage her finances while we were having breakfast. I managed to get refund for her from the shopkeeper. I planned to get up early so as to be able to use common washroom, have break-fast, manage my luggage and report on time.

I was also comfortable though we were awake almost whole night as a part of class to watch stars and planets.

I am happy to share that this was the best decision of my life. I feel more confident and it was a great learning experience.

To summarize, it was my hardest challenge and I came out with flying colours.

Truly– “All roads lead to Rome"
